Potassium clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamases are enzymes produced by some bacteria that can break down certain types of antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins. Clavulanate, when combined with other antibiotics like amoxicillin or cefuroxime, helps to overcome bacterial resistance by inhibiting the beta-lactamases. This allows the antibiotic to remain effective against a broader range of bacteria.
