SULTAMYLIN is a combination antibiotic medication that contains ampicillin and sulbactam. Ampicillin belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics, while sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor.
The combination of ampicillin and sulbactam in SULTAMYLIN helps to enhance the effectiveness of ampicillin against certain bacteria that produce beta-lactamase enzymes. Beta-lactamase enzymes are produced by some bacteria as a defense mechanism to break down and inactivate antibiotics like ampicillin. By inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes, sulbactam allows ampicillin to remain effective against these bacteria.
SULTAMYLIN is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and intra-abdominal infections.
