Cinacalcet is a medication primarily used for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are on dialysis, as well as for the treatment of hypercalcemia in patients with parathyroid carcinoma and primary hyperparathyroidism when surgery is not an option. It was also used for treating a condition called hypercalcemia of malignancy.
Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a condition that often develops in patients with chronic kidney disease due to impaired kidney function. The parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium and phosphorus levels in the body, become overactive in response to the kidney's inability to properly regulate these minerals. This can lead to an excess of parathyroid hormone (PTH), causing imbalances in calcium and phosphorus levels, and ultimately leading to bone and mineral metabolism issues.
Cinacalcet works by increasing the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptors on the parathyroid gland, which leads to a decrease in the secretion of parathyroid hormone. By reducing PTH levels, cinacalcet helps to control calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood, improving mineral balance and bone health.
