STOP PAYING MORE MONEY FOR MEDICINE
May 18, 2023
Generic medicines are often more affordable compared to their branded counterparts for several reasons: Patent expiration: Branded drugs are initially developed and marketed by pharmaceutical companies who hold patents on the active ingredients and formulations. These patents provide exclusive rights to produce and sell the medication for a specific period, typically around 20 years. Once the patent expires, other manufacturers can produce generic versions of the drug, which creates competition and drives down prices.
Development costs: Pharmaceutical companies invest significant resources in research and development to create new drugs, including conducting clinical trials and obtaining regulatory approvals. These costs are factored into the pricing of branded medicines. However, generic manufacturers do not have to bear these expenses since they produce medications with well-established active ingredients, which have already undergone rigorous testing. Marketing expenses: Branded drugs often have extensive marketing campaigns to promote their products, including advertisements, sales representatives, and other promotional activities. These marketing costs are incorporated into the pricing of the branded medication. In contrast, generic drugs rely on the reputation of the active ingredient and are not extensively marketed, leading to lower costs.
Bioequivalence requirements: Generic medicines are required to demonstrate bioequivalence to the branded versions. This means that they must contain the same active ingredient in the same dosage form, be absorbed similarly into the bloodstream, and have comparable effectiveness and safety profiles. Generic manufacturers need to meet strict regulatory standards to ensure their products are equivalent to the branded drugs, but they are not required to repeat extensive clinical trials, which reduces costs. Competition: Once a generic version of a drug becomes available, multiple manufacturers can produce and sell it. This increased competition further drives down prices as manufacturers try to capture a share of the market. The presence of multiple generic options for the same medication leads to lower prices due to market forces. It's important to note that while generic drugs are more affordable, they undergo rigorous regulatory processes to ensure their quality, safety, and effectiveness. Regulatory bodies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States, have strict guidelines to ensure the bioequivalence and quality of generic medicines.
