Rifaximin and Metronidazole
RIFAXEMANIA M  are both antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections, but they have different properties and applications.
Rifaximin:
Rifaximin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is particularly effective against certain types of bacteria, especially those in the gastrointestinal tract. It is commonly used to treat bacterial infections associated with the digestive system, such as traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Rifaximin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria.
Because of its limited absorption into the bloodstream, Rifaximin primarily targets bacteria in the gut and has minimal systemic effects. This feature makes it well-suited for treating gut-related infections without disturbing the balance of beneficial bacteria in other parts of the body.
Metronidazole:
Metronidazole is also a broad-spectrum antibiotic but is more commonly used to treat infections outside the gastrointestinal tract. It is effective against anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa. Metronidazole is commonly used to treat infections such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, certain dental infections, and various infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.
Metronidazole works by interfering with the DNA of the target bacteria and protozoa, leading to their death. It can be absorbed into the bloodstream, which allows it to reach various tissues throughout the body to combat infections in different locations.
