Lopinavir:
- Lopinavir is a protease inhibitor that works by blocking the action of an enzyme called HIV protease. HIV protease is essential for the replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and its ability to infect new cells.
- By inhibiting HIV protease, lopinavir prevents the virus from producing mature, infectious viral particles, thus slowing down the progression of HIV infection.
- Lopinavir is typically used in combination with other antiretroviral medications as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for the treatment of HIV infection.
-
Ritonavir:
- Ritonavir is another protease inhibitor that also works by inhibiting HIV protease. While ritonavir has antiviral activity on its own, it is often used at lower doses to boost the levels of other protease inhibitors, such as lopinavir.
- Ritonavir acts as a "pharmacokinetic enhancer" by inhibiting enzymes in the liver that metabolize lopinavir and other protease inhibitors. This allows lopinavir and other protease inhibitors to remain in the body for longer periods, increasing their effectiveness and reducing the frequency of dosing.
