Saxagliptin (5mg), Metformin HCI (ER) (500mg)

GLISAXAPIN M

  1. Saxagliptin (5mg):

    • Saxagliptin belongs to a class of medications known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4, which is responsible for the breakdown of incretin hormones such as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and reducing glucagon secretion.
    • Saxagliptin is taken orally and is usually prescribed once daily, with or without food.
    • Common side effects of saxagliptin may include headache, upper respiratory tract infections, and nasopharyngitis. It is generally well-tolerated but may rarely cause more serious side effects such as pancreatitis or allergic reactions.
  2. Metformin HCl (ER) (500mg):

    • Metformin is a first-line medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the biguanide class of medications and works by decreasing glucose production in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues.
    • The "ER" in Metformin HCl (ER) stands for extended-release, which means the medication is released slowly over time, providing a more consistent blood sugar-lowering effect throughout the day.
    • Metformin is typically taken orally with meals, usually once or twice daily, as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
    • Common side effects of metformin may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort. These side effects may diminish over time with continued use.
