LACTULOOZ  is a synthetic disaccharide (a type of sugar) that is used as a laxative and in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (a condition where the liver is unable to properly remove toxins from the blood, leading to neurological symptoms).
LACTULOOZ works by drawing water into the colon and softening the stool. It is not absorbed by the body and passes through the digestive system largely unchanged. In the colon, it is broken down by bacteria into substances that help promote bowel movements and increase the frequency of passing stools. This medication is prescribed for the treatment of constipation, particularly in cases where softer stools are desired, such as in individuals with hemorrhoids or after surgery.
In the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, LACTULOOZ is used to reduce the levels of ammonia in the blood.
