Cilostazol
CILOSTAZONE  is a medication primarily used to treat intermittent claudication—a condition characterized by pain, cramping, or weakness in the muscles, usually the calf muscles, during physical activities like walking or exercise. Intermittent claudication is often associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which is a condition where there is reduced blood flow to the legs due to the narrowing or blockage of the arteries.
CILOSTAZONE works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase III. This inhibition leads to various effects, including vasodilation (widening of blood vessels), inhibition of platelet aggregation (reducing the risk of blood clots), and potentially improving blood flow.
CILOSTAZONE  is primarily indicated for the treatment of intermittent claudication associated with PAD. It is not recommended for use in patients with heart failure.
The typical dosage of CILOSTAZONE is twice daily, usually taken one hour before or two hours after meals. The dosage may be adjusted based on individual patient response and tolerability.
Common side effects of CILOSTAZONE include headache, diarrhea, abnormal stools, and palpitations. It's important for individuals taking CILOSTAZONE to report any side effects to their healthcare provider.
CILOSTAZONE is contraindicated in patients with heart failure of any severity. It should be used with caution in patients with bleeding disorders or a history of bleeding.
CILOSTAZONE can interact with other medications, including anticoagulants (blood thinners), antiplatelet drugs, and certain CYP3A4 inhibitors. It's important for healthcare providers to be aware of all the medications a patient is taking to avoid potential drug interactions.
