Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. SGLT2 is a protein responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream from the kidneys. Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting SGLT2, which leads to increased excretion of glucose through the urine. This action helps lower blood glucose levels by reducing the amount of glucose reabsorbed by the kidneys, resulting in its elimination from the body. This medication also leads to a mild increase in urinary excretion of sodium, which contributes to its blood pressure-lowering effects. Dapagliflozin is usually taken orally in tablet form.
