CILOSTAZONE is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase inhibitors. It is primarily used to treat intermittent claudication, a condition characterized by pain, cramping, or weakness in the legs, typically during physical activity and often associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD occurs when there is a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries that supply blood to the legs.
CILOSTAZONE works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase III, an enzyme that plays a role in the regulation of cellular processes.
By inhibiting this enzyme, CILOSTAZONE increases levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in platelets and blood vessels, leading to vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and inhibition of platelet aggregation (clumping).
CILOSTAZONE is contraindicated in patients with heart failure.
It should be used with caution in individuals with bleeding disorders or a history of bleeding.
