Description:
PANTOSTRUM 40 is a prescription acid-suppressing tablet from Steris Healthcare. Each tablet contains Pantoprazole 40 mg and has a gastro-resistant (enteric) coating, which means the tablet passes through the stomach intact and releases the medicine further down, in the small intestine.
The coating matters because pantoprazole is destroyed by stomach acid. Without protection, the drug would break down before it could be absorbed. Once absorbed into the blood, pantoprazole travels to the cells that line the stomach wall and shuts down their acid production.

How Does Pantoprazole Work?
The stomach lining contains tiny acid pumps, scientifically called H⁺/K⁺-ATPase or the proton pump. These pumps are the final step in making stomach acid.
Pantoprazole binds to these pumps and switches them off. It does this irreversibly, so acid production only resumes when the stomach cells make new pumps, which takes roughly a day or more. That is why one dose a day can control acid for around 24 hours.
With less acid:
- Heartburn and sour taste ease
- Inflamed oesophagus and stomach lining get a chance to heal
- Ulcers can heal while protected from acid
- Damage from acid reflux is reduced
Importantly, a PPI does not work instantly. Its full effect builds over 2 to 3 days of regular use, and it is not designed as a fast-acting rescue for sudden burning (an antacid acts faster).
Why Is PANTOSTRUM 40 Important?
Acidity, heartburn and reflux are among the most common digestive complaints in India. Spicy and oily food, irregular meal timing, long gaps between meals, late dinners, tea and coffee on an empty stomach, smoking, alcohol, stress and frequent painkiller use all contribute. Many people suffer for months before seeking help, relying on occasional antacids.
Untreated acid-related disease can do more than cause discomfort:
- Chronic reflux can inflame and scar the oesophagus (oesophagitis, strictures)
- Barrett's oesophagus, a precancerous change, can develop in some people with long-standing reflux
- Peptic ulcers can bleed or perforate, which are medical emergencies
- Persistent symptoms disturb sleep, appetite, work and mood
- Acid reflux can aggravate cough and throat symptoms
Pantoprazole is one of the most widely prescribed PPIs because of its strong acid control, good tolerability and a lower tendency for drug interactions than some other PPIs.
Why this product matters in practice:
- Strong, long-lasting acid control: once-daily dosing covers the full day and night.
- Heals the lining: supports healing of oesophagitis and ulcers, not just symptom relief.
- Protects during other treatments: often prescribed alongside NSAIDs or as part of ulcer-bleeding recovery, as judged by the doctor.
- Part of H. pylori treatment: an essential component of combination regimens that eradicate the bacterium that causes many ulcers.
- Convenient strip of 15: a short, easy-to-track course.
For gastroenterologists, physicians, pharmacists and distributors, pantoprazole is a high-volume, repeat-demand cornerstone of the gastro portfolio.
