Dapagliflozin is a medication classified as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. SGLT2 is a protein responsible for reabsorbing glucose from the kidneys back into the bloodstream. Dapagliflozin works by inhibiting this protein, thereby promoting the excretion of excess glucose through the urine.
By preventing the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, dapagliflozin helps to lower blood sugar levels by reducing the amount of glucose present in the bloodstream. This mechanism of action is independent of insulin and doesn't rely on increased insulin secretion.
