Rifaximin
RIFAXIKEM is a type of antibiotic medication that is used to treat bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is commonly used to treat travelers' diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).
RIFAXIKEM works by preventing the growth and multiplication of bacteria in the GI tract, particularly those that can cause diarrhea, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli). It is not absorbed into the bloodstream and remains in the GI tract, allowing it to selectively target bacteria in the gut without affecting other parts of the body.
RIFAXIKEM is usually taken orally in the form of tablets or capsules. It is important to follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider, and to continue taking the medication until your course of treatment is completed. If your symptoms persist or worsen, you should seek medical attention.
As with any medication, RIFAXIKEM can cause side effects in some people. Common side effects may include nausea, headache, and abdominal pain.
