Calcium Polystyrene Sulfonate Powder
POLYSTERN is a medication used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood, a condition known as hyperkalemia. It works by binding with potassium in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing it from being absorbed into the bloodstream.
POLYSTERN is available in the form of a powder that is mixed with water or another liquid and taken orally. It may be given by mouth or through a nasogastric tube. The medication is usually given four times a day, but the dosing may vary depending on the severity of the hyperkalemia.
Like all medications, POLYSTERN can have side effects. The most common side effects include constipation, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Rarely, serious side effects such as intestinal necrosis (death of intestinal tissue) may occur, especially in people with reduced bowel function.
Therefore, it is important to use POLYSTERN only as prescribed and to discuss any potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
