Beta-lactamase is an enzyme produced by some bacteria that can break down penicillin-type antibiotics like amoxicillin, rendering them ineffective. Clavulanic acid helps extend the spectrum of activity of amoxicillin by protecting it from degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes.
